<Wind from the Bamboo Grove>

In the late Joseon Dynasty, the sarangbang (guest parlor) was far more than an everyday living space. It was a Joseon-style salon where poetry, calligraphy, painting, and music coalesced, serving as a creative laboratory for intellectuals and artists alike. As night deepened, singers and instrumentalists gathered by candlelight, sitting together on woven mats. The sounds they wove were unadorned and restrained—the most sophisticated form of chamber music of their time. People referred to these intimate artistic gatherings as pungnyubang.

Aram Lee’s Daegeum Salon Concert <Wind from the Bamboo Grove> is an invitation from daegeum master Aram Lee into the intimate ambiance of that era's pungnyubang. Step through the doors, and time drifts back to a serene sarangbang nestled deep within a bamboo grove. As the clear, crystalline tone of the danso opens with Suryongeum, settling the room's energy, the deep and sustained breath of Daegeum Sanjo follows, untangling life’s joys and sorrows. Amidst the interwoven melodies and improvisational Sinawi exchanged between daegeum and janggu, the boundary between stage and audience dissolves, bringing guests face-to-face with the quintessential spirit of pungnyu—seated together in one shared room, listening as one.
