Carrying the meaning of unfolding a new sonic landscape through pansori, Pansori-scape is a production that reshapes pansori into a novel performance format, grounded in profound reflections on the intrinsic vocal tones (seongeum) and the emotional subtext (imyeon) within its narrative poetry. By selecting the quintessential dramatic highlights—known as nundaemok—from the five major epic cycles of pansori (Chunhyangga, Simcheongga, Heungboga, Sugungga, and Jeokbyeokga), the production completely recomposes and reimagines the melodies while retaining the poetic narratives as its core foundation. It reflects deep artistic deliberation across the broader spectrum of the arts, spanning musical and acoustic explorations as well as linguistic and literary inquiries.

Recently, an increasing number of music lovers are coming to appreciate pansori in its authentic form, thanks to full-length epic performance series (Wanchang Pansori) and continuous album releases by young vocalists. Furthermore, with the National Changgeuk Company of Korea spearheading the development of changgeuk (Korean traditional opera) in pioneering themes and formats, the genre is truly experiencing a golden age.
Grounded in this cultural resurgence, Pansori-scape is a production that reshapes pansori into an original format, drawing upon profound reflections on the intrinsic vocal tones (seongeum) and the subtle emotional subtext (imyeon) embedded within its narrative poetry. The work reflects serious artistic deliberation spanning musical and acoustic exploration as well as linguistic and literary inquiries.
Through Pansori-scape, Aram Lee delves deeply into analyzing and reinterpreting the pansori traditions that laid the historical groundwork for sanjo. By reframing the poetic architecture and deeper narrative layers of pansori, he unlocks fresh musical and sonic interpretations that construct multidimensional acoustic spaces and temporalities. Exploring vocal music—the foundational root of instrumental music—through the lens of a daegeum master, this endeavor unleashes a newly envisioned artistic imagination for both instrumental and vocal traditions to be passed on to future generations.
